CANTON, Ohio (News Talk 1480 WHBC) – Canton City Council Monday night approved Community Reinvestment Area and Compensation agreements for three developers of data centers set to move into the city.
Two of the projects are larger hyperscale data centers.
The city granted 75% tax abatements to the developers in return for the compensation agreements, which will bring in $62 1/2-million for the next 30 years.
The developers were granted either 15- or 30-year property tax abatements.
Mayor Bill Sherer believes the city has addressed most if not all issues with data centers, with regulations in place that address noise, construction costs.
That includes the decommissioning of a building if it’s no longer being used.
The money raised will go into the city’s Comprehensive Plan Fund, to address economic development and neighborhood and housing issues.
The centers will go in across from Republic Steel; on Central Avenue and Millerton Street SE, and at Trump Avenue and Orchardview Street SE.
Three council members voted “no”.
