Texas Gov.-elect Gina Hinojosa says she has asked state officials to refrain from taking action involving public land near Boca Chica Beach during the transition to her administration.
Hinojosa made the announcement Thursday during her first news conference since defeating Republican Gov. Greg Abbott in Tuesday’s election.
The issue involves concerns over the potential transfer of state-owned land near SpaceX’s Starbase operations in Cameron County.
The Texas Tribune previously reported that a draft agenda for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission included a discussion about the possible disposition of approximately 1,300 acres of public land. The item was later removed from the final agenda.
Asked about the issue Thursday, Hinojosa said she had personally contacted the executive director of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department earlier that morning.
“The Valley is so important to me as the place I am from, and I will never forget it,” Hinojosa said.
She said she confirmed the matter was not on Thursday’s agenda and requested that no action be taken during the transition.
The potential transfer has raised concerns about the future of public land and access to Boca Chica Beach, which sits near SpaceX’s launch facilities.
Hinojosa did not say whether the department had agreed to her request or what action her administration might take once she assumes office.
She is scheduled to be sworn in Jan. 19, 2027.
